Dear Community Partner,

In 2010 the Vanderbilt Institute for Medicine and Public Health in conjunction with Meharry Medical College released its inaugural Tennessee Men’s Health Report Card. The Report Card based its “grades” on a comparison of Tennessee data to nations goals set by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The report card did showed leading the 14 causes of death for all men, African American men and White men. African American men in Tennessee received a grade of “F” in 6 categories, a grade of “D” in two categories, a grade of “C” in four categories and a grade of “A” in two categories. In an effort to address and educate men on this annual report card, the Nashville area Alumni men of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. will host “FROM ALPHA 2 OMEGA: A Black Men’s Health Fair” on Saturday, June 16, 2012 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Northwest YMCA. The Health Fair will feature hourly health talks by Dr. Wendell Yarbrough of Vanderbilt University, Dr. Rahn Bailey from the Elam Center at Meharry Medical College, Dr. Sekou Mollette from TF Medical Group and Dr. Leonard Webster from Meharry Medical College. The health fair will also include health checks by Matthew Walker Health Center, the American Diabetes Association and the Meharry Medical College.

We chose June 16 because it is the day before Father’s Day. Father’s Day is a time when communities celebrate the special men in their lives. Therefore, we encourage you to celebrate your father, brother, grandfather, uncle friend or father figure by bringing to this day of education and fun.

Enclosed is a flyer that advertises this event. We ask that you share this information with your organization and encourage them to attend this inaugural event that hopes to pro long the lives of our African American brothers!

Thank you in advance for your consideration and we look forward to seeing you on June 16, 2012!
